WAWA, Pa. -- Wawa Inc. brought back the Gobbler.
The convenience store chain's limited-time-only hot Turkey Bowl and Gobbler sandwich, which has inspired a Facebook group of fans, feature turkey gravy, mashed potatoes and stuffing, topped with a serving of cranberry sauce.
The demand for the Turkey Bowl wasn't expected when the chain first offered the specialty three years ago. "We under-anticipated how many people would want it," Wawa's Lori Bruce told NBCPhiladelphia.com.
How many Turkey Bowls and Gobbler Shorti sandwiches are typically sold? "A lot," Bruce joked. "That's only an estimate."
Starting Nov. 16, the Turkey Bowl or Gobbler cost $2.99 for a limited time. The products will remain in stores "just long enough, but not too long," Bruce told the news station. "We don't want to drag it out until summertime."
Wawa's Facebook followers have come up with a twist on the Thanksgiving-inspired Turkey Bowls or hoagies -- hot turkey over macaroni and cheese with cranberry sauce on top, the report noted.
In other Wawa news, after a two-and-one-half-year odyssey, the "Wawa 2010 Girls," finished their quest to shop at each of Wawa's 570 stores in the chain's five-state market, according to The Pottstown Mercury newspaper.
The five women -- Emily Koch, Mary Speer, Andrea Sasin, Ann Wuetig and Jill Fitzpatrick -- began their journey in 2007 to raise funds for the Melanoma International Foundation (MIF) in honor of their classmate, who died from the disease. Their goal was to finish the tour before 2010, and they documented their mission at http://wawa2010.blogspot.com.
Their journey was completed when they made the first purchase at the grand opening of the Wawa store in Zieglerville, Pa., last week, the newspaper reported.
In addition to matching the $2,500 the women spent, Wawa is making a $10,000 contribution to MIF, and additionally donated money for every hoagie the girls built at the Zieglerville store's grand opening, according to the report.
