Snacks Dominated Top Coupon Categories in June

NEW YORK -- Snack categories took the most spots on the list of top 10 popular online coupon categories printed in June, according to digital coupon network Coupons.com. Sweet snacks, cookies, and salty snacks ranked fourth, fifth and eighth, respectively.

"As Americans seek out cost-effective ways to entertain at home, especially during the summer months when kids are out of school, snacks are a popular food choice," noted Kim Danger, family savings expert for Mountain View, Calif.-based Coupons.com.

Yogurt topped the list, while ready-to-eat cereal came in second. Powdered beverage mix rose four slots to the No. 3 position, and coffee advanced to sixth place. Cheese fell from No. 4 to the No. 7 ranking, and dessert items made it to No. 9. Rounding out the top 10 was condiments. The listing is based on the number of coupon prints by category on Coupons.com and sites across the Coupons.com publisher network in June 2009.

Shoppers printed more than $57 million in savings in June on Coupons.com and the Coupons.com publisher network, representing a 130-percent increase over the year-ago period. Additionally, between Jan. 1, 2009, and June 13, 2009, $313 million in savings was printed, which is equivalent to the amount of savings printed in all of 2008.

"More consumers are using digital coupons, and more companies are turning to us to promote their brands," said Coupons.com CEO Steven Boal. "Since January, Coupons.com has jumped from the 155th-largest Web property in the U.S. to No. 43, and we continue to target approximately $1 billion in savings printed by the end of the year."
