    National Association of Shell Marketers gets a new executive director.

    The National Association of Shell Marketers (NASM) hired Darrell K. Smith as its executive director. NASM, based in Springfield, Va., represents wholesale distributors of Shell products in the U.S.

    Smith comes to the position from the Industrial Minerals Association, North America and the National Industrial Sand Association, where he served as the vice president of government and environmental affairs. Prior to this, he was the director of the public health team for the American Chemistry Council.

    Before diving into public policy, Smith spent 15 years as a safety and environmental compliance manager in a variety of industries.

    Smith is currently completing his doctorial degree in environmental conflict resolution at George Mason University.

    "We are delighted that Darrell has agreed to take the position and we look forward to working with him to continue to grow the association's services," said NASM chairman David Adcox. "We think his background and experience working with similar groups will help us to strengthen existing programs and develop new ones."

    The appointment is effective as of Jan. 2. Smith will replace NASM president and executive director Tom West, who is retiring after working for NASM for the past 27 years.

    In other people news, the Kroger Co. elected Ronald L. Sargent to the company's board of directors. He is current the CEO of Staples, Inc.

    Sargent joined Staples as the vice president of operations in 1989, and worked his way through the ranks, holding positions such as president of North America operations and president and chief operating officer. Before joining Staples, Sargent spent a decade with Kroger, serving in various positions. He has also gained experience from positions with Aramark Corp., Mattel, Inc., and The Yankee Candle Company, Inc.

    Sargent will serve until the company's annual meeting in June. With his election, the company board increases to 15 members.

    In supplier news, Coca-Cola Co. promoted Muhtar Kent, president of international operations, to the position of chief operations officer. Effective immediately, the promotion makes him the leading choice to succeed current Coke chief executive Neville Isdell, Reuters reported.

    Kent first joined the company in Atlanta in 1978. He comes to the position from the position of COO of its North Asia, Eurasia and Middle East Group. In this position, Kent will be responsible for the company's operating units worldwide.

    In other people news, Additech appointed Mitch Telson to the company's board of directors. Telson, who has served convenience chains such as 7-Eleven and Circle K, has operated his consulting practice for major retailers for the past ten years since his retirement from Circle K.

    Prior to his consulting practice, Telson worked with Circle K, which was bankrupt at the time. He joined as executive vice president and then its chief operating officer. He stayed on for four years, until Circle K turned around and went public again.

    Telson also worked with one-time 7-Eleven parent company Southland Corp., where he spent 21 years working his way from management trainee to regional vice president.

    "We are delighted that Mitch has joined our Board of Directors. He brings Additech some unique insights into the retail industry fuels business and I look forward to working with Mitch as we continue to scale our business," said Additech chief executive Ralph Koehrer.

    In other people news, Frank Barrett-Mills joined BKI-Worldwide as the Northeast regional sales manager, where he will be responsible for sales development in the Northeast U.S. and Eastern Canada.

    Barrett-Mills comes to the position with many years of experience in the foodservice industry, as he has served for Henny Penny Corp., Arneg Refrigeration, Cres-Cor and Metro.

    "We are excited about Frank's experience and knowledge," said Ken Goodwin, president of BKI-Worldwide. "We know he will provide a significant contribution to BKI's overall success."

    In other people news, Primo Water Corp. hired Darren Howanietz as its director of global sourcing. He comes to the position from his role as president and CFO of Pioneer Strategic Sourcing -- a global supply chain solutions firm.

    Prior to this, Howanietz spent 10 years as the vice president of operations for UniFlame Corp. There he worked with overseas suppliers in the design, importing and supply for the company.

    In addition, Primo Water also hired Mike Farra as the sales leader for the Northeastern U.S. and Jeannie Falls as the sales leader for the Southeastern U.S. Jonathon Kiger joined the company as the general manager for the Carolina region. Chris Clemmons also joined the company as the sales director, where he will be responsible for the development of the hardware category.
