Flying J Gets Wired

OGDEN, Utah -- Flying J will implement Web-based software applications for customer relationship management (CRM), inventory and distribution management and retail and wholesale pricing. The CRM software, developed by Flying J and run on the WebLogic platform of San Jose-based BEA Systems Inc., will be used to generate data for direct-marketing campaigns and manage the more than one-million customer accounts in Flying J's loyalty programs.

The second portion of the software package, also developed by Flying J, will help the company track gasoline and diesel inventories, schedule deliveries, identify favorable supply options and set pricing on a station by station basis The third part of the software is an integrated price book that establishes product pricing for all retail items at the company's more than 150 truck stops and travel plazas.

"Our goal is to erase the lines separating applications so that employees can do everything they need to do in a unified, simplified work environment," Bron McCall, Flying J's chief information officer said in a release. "For example, all three applications are linked to our point-of-sale system for real-time management of product inventory and loyalty programs. We've also been able to link electronically to our biggest suppliers so that ordering and invoicing can be handled online."

McCall said that by the end of 2002, the three internal applications will be accessible to employees via a single sign-on. In subsequent phases of implementation, the company hopes to integrate functions of the portal with suppliers and business partners.
