Wawa Moving to Route 66…New Jersey

NEPTUNE, N.J. -- Wawa is hitting Route 66, New Jersey. And while the road may not be as famous as the cross country one made famous in song and on the small screen, the stretch through this area of Monmouth County is famous for its abundance of retail.

According to the Asbury Park Press, workers are clearing a tract of land next to the Holiday Inn Express in Neptune. Plans call for a 4,188-square-foot Wawa with six gas pumps to rise on the property. Wawa is not new to the area. Nearby stores can be found in Tinton Falls and Wall.

Other retail developments on the roadway include a proposed Cracker Barrel Old Country Store on a site in front of the Jersey Shore Premium Outlets and a Restaurant Depot, which is putting down roots in a 61,190-square-foot building that formerly housed an Office Depot, according to the newspaper. Cracker Barrel filed conceptual plans for a restaurant with the township in March but has yet to file any formal plans.

And there is still room to grow. Vacancies along Route 66 include the former Value City department store and Furniture King at the Seaview Square shopping center.
