Safeway Expands Fuel Program

SPEARFISH, S.D. -- In an effort to create a more customer-friendly atmosphere, the Spearfish, S.D., supermarket retailer Safeway is constructing a gas station in front of the main store.

"This is Safeway's attempt to provide another service for the customer, to become more of a one-stop shop," said store manager Ron Niesent. "We try to be as much as we can to the customer and satisfy as many of their needs as we can."

According to Niesent, Safeway stores around the country have included gas stations for a number of years. The Spearfish gas station is the first in its district of stores, which includes 11 Wyoming stores, three South Dakota stores and three Nebraska stores, according to the Black Hills (S.D.) Pioneer.

Construction of the gas station is expected to be completed by Sept. 26.

Following the construction phase, Niesent said technology officials from the Safeway Denver district would install the computers and other technological components of the store. Neisent said he expects the store to open its doors by the end of October. When it is fully operational, Niesent said the station would employ between five and eight people.

"There is nothing at this end of the town," he said, referring to the location of Spearfish gas stations. "I think it will make it a little more convenient for some people to have something out here."
