WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — The Krause Gateway Center is taking another step closer to reality. The center will serve as Kum & Go LC's new headquarters.

According to the retailer, construction fencing has been installed around the perimeter of the project and demolition of existing buildings is slated to begin this week. A groundbreaking event will be held later this fall, and construction is expected to continue through early 2018.

Kum & Go will also present updated plans for its new headquarters to the Urban Design Review Board this week. That presentation will include the release of updated, photograph-like renderings of the building.

Krause Gateway Center is rising at 1459 Grand Ave. in downtown Des Moines. The five-story building is being planned and constructed for LEED certification, and will feature glass on all sides to provide transparency and light throughout the building. The layout was designed to foster collaboration through innovative and unique use of space and light, including outdoor terraces available to Kum & Go associates for flexible work areas, as CSNews Online previously reported.

The cost for the project is now expected to reach $151 million, up from the $92 million that was estimated before the company chose an architect. On Aug. 21, the Iowa Economic Development Authority Board approved $18.59 million in economic incentives for Krause Holdings, parent company of the convenience store chain.

Kum & Go is also seeking $20 million in tax-increment financing from the City of Des Moines.

Internationally recognized architect Renzo Piano Building Workshop designed the building. Local architect OPN Architects will provide architectural counsel and construction drawings. Ryan Cos. U.S. Inc. has been selected as the construction partner.

West Des Moines-based Kum & Go is a family-owned retail company with more than 430 stores across 11 states, including Iowa, Arkansas, Colorado, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and Wyoming.
