Weird but True: Gumby Strikes Out in Attempted Robbery

SAN DIEGO -- The trend of robbing convenience stores dressed as unassuming cartoon characters continued this week, but maybe this would-be thief should have gone for muscle-wielding Popeye instead of clay-animated Gumby.

According to a report by KTLA, a person dressed as the 1950s green character tried to rob a 7-Eleven store near the Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood of San Diego. Surveillance footage shows the robber enter the store with another man, not his just-as-famous sidekick Pokey, and approach the c-store clerk.

After asking for a pack of cigarettes, the costumed man allegedly told the clerk it was a robbery. But instead of emptying the cash register, the clerk responded, "Come on man, don't waste my time. I have things to do," according to the news outlet. The Gumby-clad robber claimed to have a gun but he got caught up in his costume when allegedly trying to pull it out.

Adding to the insult, the thief dropped some change during the attempted hold-up and the clerk reportedly helped him pick up the coins.

According to the police, though the video of the inept robber is amusing officers, they are taking the crime seriously. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest of Gumby or his accomplice.
