Weird but True: Bear Steals Quick Chek Sandwich

SUSSEX, N.J. -- Quick Chek sandwiches are apparently a hit among the area bear population.

According to a recent report by the Times Herald-Record, Vernon Township resident Henry Rouwendal, 51, told police he was in the driveway of his house around 10:30 p.m., packing for a business trip to New Hampshire. His car trunk was open and a sandwich from Quick Chek was inside.

Suddenly, Rouwendal was knocked to the ground, and when he rolled over, he saw a black bear standing over him, according to the report. The bear then grabbed the Quick Chek sandwich from the trunk. Rouwendal said he kicked the bear and it ran toward the back of his house.

He suffered a large abrasion on his head and multiple bruises.

When police came to his home on Saturday, they found bits of the sandwich and the wrapper on the side of the house. The bear was long gone, the report stated.

The incident was reported to the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.
