Uni-Marts to Sell 250 Units

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Uni-Marts LLC will offer for sale approximately 250 of its operating businesses in Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware and Maryland over the next year. Uni-Marts has a 32-year history operating convenience stores, tobacco outlets and truck stops under its Uni-Mart and Choice brands, most of which offer gasoline products.

The company was recently taken private in a transaction involving the company's founder, Henry Sahakian, and Raj Vakharia, former managing director of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette.

Uni-Marts is following a growing industry trend, initiated by the major oil companies, in which ownership of convenience stores and gas stations is put in the hands of individual dealers and operators who are able to set their own margins and purchase their own merchandise. Uni-Marts is offering equipment, long-term gasoline supply agreements and long-term leases to buyers of operating businesses, as well as allowing them to license the Uni-Mart and Choice brands. Uni-Marts will, however, continue to own the Uni-Mart brand, as well as the land, improvements and underground equipment at the sites.

"Combining Uni-Marts' 32-year history in the convenience store industry with the entrepreneurial energies of hundreds of individual operators, many of whom bring years of experience from fast food and other retail businesses, to the table is a fantastic concept," said Vakharia, Uni-Marts co-chairman. "Uni-Marts is creating great opportunities for entrepreneurs to buy businesses with a proven track record. Buyers will only need a modest investment as they can take advantage of SBA and more traditional financing options."

More than 200 businesses will be offered through a sealed bid sale process with a Dec. 3 deadline, which is being coordinated by NRC Realty Advisors LLC. "The balance of the businesses are under prior agreements," said Evan Gladstone, executive managing director of NRC. Uni-Marts and NRC are conducting a series of How-to-Buy seminars to familiarize interested buyers with the offerings, the terms and conditions of the sale and bidding procedures. A list of available businesses is available at www.nrc.com/uni-mart.

NRC is an exhibitor at the annual National Association of Convenience Stores convention in Las Vegas beginning Oct. 18, and invites all interested parties to stop at the NRC booth number 5732 to pick up a list of available Uni-Mart stores. Additionally, interested buyers can call NRC’s customer service number at 800-747-3342 extension 413 for the preliminary site list and free color sales brochure available after Oct. 25. Buyers may also visit NRC’s website at nrc.com/unimart to view properties and learn more about the sale.
