Toronto Ice Cream Company to Distribute Unilever Brands

TORONTO -- CoolBrands International Inc. will distribute Unilever ice cream brands and frozen desserts in several U.S. states and the New York City area, the Canadian Press reported.

The Toronto ice cream and frozen yogurt maker said Monday that its wholly owned subsidiary, Eskimo Pie Frozen Distribution Inc., will ship Unilever's ice creams and frozen novelties to retailers in the states of Washington, Oregon, California and Florida and the metropolitan New York area. Unilever's brands include Ben & Jerry's, Klondike, Popsicle, Good Humor and Breyer's.

Financial terms of the distribution deal were not revealed.

"The alignment of Unilever's brands with CoolBrands' distribution capabilities is a good strategic fit for both companies," said CoolBrands' president and co-chief executive David Stein, according to the news report. "Partner brands are an important component of our distribution strategy and we believe Unilever will be a valuable partner for CoolBrands going forward."

Bruce Shoecraft, a Unilever vice-president, said "the combination of our strong brands with CoolBrands' outstanding distribution capabilities will drive growth for Unilever and CoolBrands over the long term."

In July, CoolBrands acquired from Swiss sweets company Nestle almost all its distribution businesses in the U.S., making CoolBrands one of only two direct-to-store ice cream delivery companies for grocery and convenience stores.
