Quick Chek Honors Doritos Creator

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J. -- One week after the death of Arch West, the man credited with creating Doritos, Quick Chek honored his memory by awarding one customer a $150 Quick Chek gift card to keep the winner's shelves stocked with the snack for some time.

The locally headquartered convenience store chain asked fans to respond to the contest via its Facebook page. After receiving more than 1,000 responses in less than 24 hours, company executives randomly chose a winner.

West, a retired Frito-Lay marketing executive, passed away at the age of 97 last week at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas. According to the Dallas Morning News, West was vacationing with his family near San Diego when he found a snack shack selling fried tortilla chips in 1961. As a marketing vice president for Frito-Lay, West brought the tortilla chip idea back to the Dallas-based snack company. However, company officials were less than enthused with the concept. Things changed, though, after consumer testing proved positive.

In recognition of his contribution to the snack world, West's daughter Jana Hacker told the newspaper that the family would be "tossing Doritos chips in before they put the dirt over the urn."
