GOODLETTSVILLE, Tenn. -- Dollar General Corp. is starting the new year with an aggressive expansion. The retailer announced yesterday it plans to create 6,000 new jobs, add 635 new stores and complete 550 relocations in 2013.

If the plans are successful, the company, which turns 75 next year, will have opened its 11,000th store before the year's end. It also will have created 30,000 jobs in the last six years.

"Dollar General's continued growth reflects our customers' increasing satisfaction with our everyday low prices and convenience," said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General's chairman and CEO.

Dollar General is hoping to generate a high caliber candidate pool by participating in Paychecks for Patriots, a program that aims to reduce veteran unemployment.

"Dollar General is a thriving organization looking to attract new employees that embody our mission of 'Serving Others,' which complements the company's efforts to promote from within. We are excited to welcome new talent with a passion for the retail business," said Bob Ravener, executive vice president and chief people officer.

The company also announced it was recently recognized in Training magazine's Top 125 for the second consecutive year, and will continue its employee development efforts in 2013.
