PHILADELPHIA -- Convenience store operators will perhaps not want to give a lot of "brotherly love" to a city councilman's latest proposal here. According to KYW-TV, City Councilman Curtis Jones is proposing that all convenience stores must provide a receipt following every purchase.

Jones said that not all c-stores provide receipts, questioning if some store operators hope to keep cash transactions off the records.

Making receipts mandatory would ensure c-stores could not evade taxes, as well as provide an easier avenue for consumers to exchange products, Jones told the TV station.

"It'll document and memorialize the amount of receipts going through some of these small stores," Jones told the news outlet. "And it will ensure consumers (of) their ability to exchange good in a reputable way, so it doesn't create conflict."

Mandatory c-store receipts in Philadelphia could provide another benefit, Jones said. It would help curb underage tobacco purchases because the product would show up on receipts.

Jones' proposal still needs to be heard in a committee meeting before being brought forth for a vote. No date for a committee hearing has been set, reported the news source.
