    Shell, Redner's Markets Give Back

    Oil company volunteers team with NASCAR driver to improve community; c-store operator kicks off its 27th annual Toys for Tots campaign.

    HOUSTON -- Volunteers from Shell Oil Co. and Motiva Enterprises teamed up with NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick and the No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil crew from Richard Childress Racing to participate in the Shell and Motiva United Way Day of Caring on Oct. 30, for the Houston Salvation Army Boys' and Girls' Club, Shell stated.

    Harvick, crew members and approximately 125 Shell and Motiva volunteers re-tilled a baseball field, landscaped, refurbished the children’s area, and painted and organized storage rooms at the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, according to the company.

    "Coming here today and pitching in to help support a great cause with Shell and United Way is just a small way that I can give back to the Houston community," Harvick said in a statement. "Shell has been very active with the United Way and a great partner over the years on many programs, and we wanted to show our support for their efforts."

    Shell and Motiva’s United Way campaign is an employee/retiree program providing individuals the opportunity make monetary and/or sweat equity donations to the United Way of Greater Houston. Employees are provided time away from their jobs during normal working hours to volunteer and participate in corporate-sponsored outreach efforts, the company stated.

    Shell has supported the United Way for 60 years, and in the last 20, contributed more than $111 million.

    In other charitable news, Reading, Pa.-based Redner’s Markets Inc., operator of 39 Warehouse Markets and 12 Quick Shoppes, launched its 27th annual U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program Sunday, Nov. 2. Through the program, new toys and monetary donations will be colleted at all Redner’s Warehouse Markets and Quick Shoppes in Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland, the company stated.

    In addition, customers can make a $1 donation to the organization through the purchase of red paper trains, which are hung on the walls of the stores. Redner’s began offering the paper trains in 2000 as a way to increase the monetary collection, and since then, the trains have increased monetary donations to Toys for Tots by more than $500,000, the company stated.
