ALTOONA, Pa. -- For the sixth consecutive year, the Best Places to Work in PA group has ranked Sheetz Inc. as the No. 1 retailer in Pennsylvania, and No. 12 overall on its list of the top 100 companies for 2007.
Sheetz executives said in a statement they are proud of this accomplishment because it is primarily driven by the opinions of Sheetz employees. "This honor is truly something special for us at Sheetz because it comes from our employees," said Stan Sheetz, president and CEO. "Without good people on our team, we wouldn't be where we are today. I thank everyone who works at Sheetz for their commitment and dedication."
Benefits, such as quarterly bonuses, all-expense paid trips to celebrate milestone anniversaries with the company, and employee stock ownership programs all contributed to Sheetz getting the nod over other companies.
The Best Places to Work in PA program is open to all publicly or privately held organizations, whether for-profit or nonprofit. The companies must have a facility in Pennsylvania, at least 25 employees in the state and be in good standing with all Commonwealth agencies under the governor's jurisdiction. Sheetz is ranked in the large company category, comprised on businesses with more than 251 employees.
The assessment process is made up of a two-part survey in which employees are asked to evaluate their workplace experience and the employer is asked to describe its company benefits, policies and practices along with other information, the retailer noted.
"A primary corporate objective here at Sheetz is for our employees to want to be at work -- to enjoy it," Sheetz added. "We are continually learning what employees and customers want and we constantly try to improve those things. It feels great to know we are able to provide our people with a gratifying work experience."
The Sheetz chain also has been honored with similar recognition in the state of Ohio, where it's currently listed as the fifth best large company in the state.
Based in Altoona, Pa., Sheetz, is one of America's fastest-growing, family-owned and operated c-store chains, with more than $3.9 billion in revenue for 2007 and 11,000-plus employees.
