RJR Ends NASCAR Sponsorship

HOMESTEAD -- R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., parent company of Winston cigarettes, has sponsored NASCAR's premier racing series for the last time after 33 years. Nextel will become the new sponsor next year.

More than 70,000 fans attended the last NASCAR Winston Cup race on Sunday, and hours before the Ford 400 race began, souvenir stands sold out of a T-shirt reading, "The last NASCAR Winston Cup Race . . . The Victory Lap . . . I was there Nov. 16, 2003."

Also, a Winston Cup memories video featuring all of the series' champions was shown, and retired NASCAR champion Richard Petty, who won the first Winston Cup in 1971, and Tony Stewart, the 2002 champion, took a commemorative victory lap before the race.
