Publix Expands Fuel Commitment

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Publix Super Markets Inc. announced plans to enter the Nashville, Tenn., market with the purchase of seven Albertson's supermarkets and one Albertson's fuel center and convenience store. The transaction is expected to be completed by mid-August.

"Our philosophy has always been to pursue the best opportunities for continued expansion," Publix CEO Charlie Jenkins said in a statement. "Although our growth has come mainly from building new stores, the ability to quickly move into these existing locations allows us rapid entry into this dynamic market."

Publix will open two of the stores this fall: one in Nashville and another in Franklin, Tenn. The fuel center and convenience store, located on the property of the Franklin Marketplace shopping center, will also be opened.
