Lorillard Recalls Some Newport Non-Menthol Cigarettes

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Citing "an abundance of caution," Lorillard Inc. has issued a voluntary call of certain Newport Non-Menthol cigarettes.

The company made the precautionary move after discovering the possibility that some Newport Non-Menthol cigarettes made on June 29 and 30 could contain small pieces of plastic. Upon the discovery, Lorillard executives turned to the Food and Drug Administration for guidance, according to a company release.

Lorillard stressed that, at this point, no plastic has been found in any of the cigarettes. However, smoking a cigarette that contains plastic could cause discomfort or irritate the respiratory tract, the release noted.

The recall affects Newport Non-Menthol Box 80's with code numbers 1-O-29-750 and 1-O-30-750, and Newport Non-Menthol Box 100's with code numbers 1-O-29-440 and 1-O-30-440. No other Lorillard products, including Newport Menthol and other brands, are part of the recall.

Newport Non-Menthol hit the market last fall in the company's bid to strengthen its competitive position, as CSNews Online reported. At the time, Lorillard chairman, president and CEO Martin Orlowsky said the brand would give the company "a greater opportunity to compete in the largest segment of the U.S. cigarette market, as the non-menthol category represents approximately 70 percent of total industry volume."
