Workers Make Best of Working on Christmas

While most people spend time with their families on Christmas day, others -- such as firefighters, police officers and convenience store workers -- must spend the day on the job.

Christmas is traditionally a big sales day for convenience stores as consumers, especially those many who are traveling to visit family, stop in for last-minute gifts or stocking stuffers.

Michael Martinez, manager of the Kent Kwik convenience store in Midland, Texas, told the Midland Reporter-Telegram that he doesn't mind working on Christmas.

"It's the busiest time of the year for us with all the supermarkets closed down," he told the West Texas newspaper. He added that his family has celebrated Christmas on Christmas Eve, or sometimes on Dec. 23, for the past five years that he has been managing the c-store.

Others have mixed feelings about working the holiday. Most workers would prefer to be home with their families but understand the importance of the day to their companies' business. On the other hand, they also know that they are not exactly saving lives, like the more vital services provides by firefighters and police officers.
