Tomato Scare Lessens

NEW YORK -- According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), salmonella-tainted "saintpaul" tomatoes have sickened at least 228 people since mid-April, 25 of whom have been hospitalized.

While the source of the ill-fated tomatoes remains illusive, some Canadian retailers are beginning to place the popular red vegetables back on shelves and menus including Boston Pizza, Tim Hortons and Cara Operations, which operates Swiss Chalet, Milestone's, Kelsey's, Harvey's.

This trend is expected to happen throughout most of the nation as the FDA announced this afternoon that the number of states with tomatoes free from salmonella and safe to eat totals 37, including Puerto Rico, Israel, Guatemala, and the state of Baja California in Mexico.

The FDA, however, continues to monitor parts of Mexico and Florida as a possible source of the salmonella outbreak.
