S&S Food Stores Donates to Children's Miracle Network

LAKE CITY, Fla. -- S&S Food Stores, operator of the 47-unit Scaff’s Markets convenience chain based here, donated more than $74,500 last week to the Children’s Miracle Network Shands Children’s Hospital at the University of Florida, according to a report in the Lake City Reporter.

The donation was presented during a two-hour program and lunch at Southern Oaks Golf and Country Club, and this year’s contribution brings the total funds raised by S&S for Children’s Miracle Network to more than $810,000, the report stated. During the campaign, 42 out of the 47 stores raised $850 or more, and 30 stores brought in more than $1,000, the report stated.

The c-store chain began donating to the organization in 1986, according to Margaret Friend, director of annual giving at Shands Children’s Hospital.

"It’s the front line cashiers [at S&S] who really make our fundraising successful, by encouraging your customers to give," Friend said during the event. "By doing this, your fundraising effort has really inspired everybody, and especially inspired everybody at Shands Children’s Hospital."

The convenience chain also name its 2008 S&S Food Store Employee of the Year during the ceremony, which is Joyce Foley, a cashier in Live Oak. Foley was also Employee of the Month in April 2008.
