Sheetz Gets OK to Expand Blairsville, Pa. Store

BLAIRSVILLE, Pa. -- Sheetz Inc. was granted the go-ahead by town officials here last week to expand its convenience store located at Blairsville’s main intersection.

Town council approved Sheetz’ plan to demolish a vacant East Market Street building that formerly housed a NAPA Auto Parts store, in order to expand parking for the adjacent Sheetz store at Market and Walnut streets, the Blairsville Dispatch reported.

According to the plan, Sheetz’ expansion would add nine parking spaces for a total of 36, and would allow additional access to and from the lot via Sugar Alley. Sheetz will install landscaping as a buffer along the newly exposed wall of an adjacent laundromat, and will evaluate and address the condition of the wall at the time of demolition.

Also, at the request of borough and Blairsville downtown officials, the approved plan includes a brick pergola with enclosed community bulletin boards that would separate a new outdoor patio area from the sidewalk along Market Street. The patio would be fitted with three tables and would be located in the corner of the lot where the Auto Parts building now stands, according to the newspaper report.

Bob Franks, an engineer for Sheetz, told the paper the convenience chain hopes to incorporate in its patio design the same style of brick pavers and street lamps the borough recently installed in a streetscaping improvement along an adjacent section of Market Street. He noted the intention is to keep all large truck traffic on the opposite side of the Sheetz lot.

The project still must receive approval under the state's Uniform Construction Code.

Jim Carmo, Main Street manager for Blairsville Downtown, said he was pleased by the pergola design presented by Sheetz. "When we talked to them, we indicated that we could have a win-win, and they carried through with it," Carmo said.
