Publix Expands Gas Station, C-store Concept

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- Publix continues to expand on its gas station/convenience store concept, called "Pix," which it first started in 2001, according to Central Florida News 13.

The company recently opened its 13th store in north Lakeland, but Publix said the stores are still just experiments, the news station reported.

"We're still trying out new concepts, different sizes, different product mixes to try to figure out what's the best bet for us," Shannon Patten with Publix, said in the report.

Grocery retail expert Burt Flickinger III said the stores are getting non-Publix customers to shop at Publix supermarkets. "It's going to be a very daunting challenge to try to stay alive as Publix gets better with their Pix stores," he said.

Flickinger also expects Publix to add 150 Pix stores in the next five years, he said in the report.
