Marathon Petroleum Co. Sponsors NASCAR Driver

FINDLAY, Ohio -- Starting at the NASCAR Nextel Cup's Allstate 400 Brickyard race in Indianapolis, the number 45 car, driven by Kyle Petty, will be sponsored by Marathon Petroleum Co., according to a report in the San Jose Mercury News.

The #45 car will display the Marathon brand as the primary sponsor in four additional races -- Michigan, Bristol, Richmond, and Atlanta -- and will be an associate sponsor the season's remaining races.

Marathon senior vice president of marketing, Mary Ellen Peters told the San Jose Mercury News, "The team is owned by Richard Petty, the man known as the 'King of NASCAR.' We believe this move provides a continued presence for Marathon in all of the remaining races this season."

The sponsorship comes at a good time for Marathon. "We are looking forward to developing a strong partnership with Marathon, starting this weekend at one of the biggest events of the season," Kyle Petty, driver of the #45 Petty Enterprises Dodge, told the newspaper.

Marathon Petroleum Company LLC has a refining capacity of 974,000 barrels-per-day with its seven refineries. The company's retail marketing is made up of approximately 5,400 locations in 17 states. Nearly 70 percent of those locations are Marathon branded.
