MAPCO Stores Get Networked
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- MAPCO Express stores linked its 248 stores in a data and voice network provided by Cybera Inc., according to a report in the Nashville City Paper. MAPCO's stores are concentrated primarily in Nashville, Memphis and Richmond. It also has stores in Arkansas, Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Louisiana.
Cybera Inc., founded by a former chief technology officer of BlueStar Communications, knits various digital subscriber lines (DSL), T-1 telephone trunks, frame relays and Ethernet connections into a dedicated Real Private Network (RPN) for both data and voice traffic. Since Cybera's SmartNetwork is separate from the Internet and limited to internal traffic, and therefore is more secure for sensitive transactions or applications, Nashville City Paper stated.
The ballpark cost is roughly $130 per location, including line costs, support and management expenses, said Cybera Chief Executive and co-founder Cliff Duffey, according to the report.
MAPCO uses the RPN for credit card transactions, monitoring security cameras remotely, and tracking pump, gasoline and store inventories in real time, according to the Nashville publication.
