Kwik Trip Eyes Growth in Green Bay

HOWARD, Wis. -- A new Kwik Trip convenience store and gas station currently under construction here will be the fifth Kwik Trip store in the Northeastern Wisconsin area, the Green Bay Press Gazette reported.

Construction on the convenience store, gas station and car wash at 369 Cardinal Lane has already kicked off and will be completed by October, Hans Zietlow, director of real estate for the La Crosse-based convenience store chain, told the newspaper.

"As good sites come along, we'll continue to grow in the Green Bay area," Zietlow said, adding the new Howard store will stand out as one of the nicest in the area.

That's partly because the village had some aesthetic and lighting requirements, since the Cardinal Lane area is part of its future planned village center, the report stated.

"The brick will match the existing buildings, and they're going with lighting consistent throughout that area," said Dave Wiese, community development director for the village. "We want to keep it consistent, but keep it individual in each business."

During the local approval process, some neighboring residents protested the idea of a gas station at both the Plan Commission and Village Board levels. They felt a 24-hour gas station would increase the noise and traffic in the community.

A number of conditions were imposed at the time of approval, including that the car wash would only operate between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Additionally, the lighting on and near the property will match those of the Woodfield development. Outside music is prohibited, as is any sort of microphone announcement except in the case of an emergency.

Despite the opposition from area residents, Zietlow told the newspaper he thinks neighbors will warm to the idea once they recognize the convenience factor.

"Along Cardinal Lane, there's going to be a convenience store somewhere," he said. "One of the things that generally happens when we go in somewhere is that neighbors don't like the idea, but after it's there, they're not so sure why they were against it, and they use it."
