Kwik Shops Stores Get Bigger

WICHITA, Kan. -- Kwik Shop started construction on two pilot convenience store expansions in northwest Wichita to target underserved food and prescription niches, according to a report in The Wichita Eagle.

The new expanded locations should be open in May 2010, said Kwik Shop President Jeff Parker in the report, and will expand by an additional 2,000 square feet and employ between five and 10 more people.

The company will add deli space to offer more prepared foods, expanding its response to QuikTrip's venture into fresh foods, and will offer a pharmacy staffed by Kroger's Dillons division, the report stated.

"We think the two services kind of go together," Parker said in the newspaper report. "We try to be convenient for the customer and what they need, whether that be a rotisserie chicken or a prescription."

The Kwik Shop expansions are driven by the success of a similar layout in Florida for Kroger's Tom Thumb division, Parker said in the report.

In response, QuikTrip spokesperson Mike Thornbrugh said pharmacies "aren't even on our radar right now," but when it comes to prepared foods, the company is ready, the report stated.

"We've made no secret that we're going to add an arrow to our quiver in that we're committed to the fresh food offering," Thornbrugh said.

QuikTrip also is expanding its Wichita locations, building bigger stores with more gas pumps.
