Fresh & Easy Donates $1,000 to Youth Program

INDIO, Calif. -- The Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market here celebrated its one-year anniversary Wednesday with a $1,000 donation to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert, which said it will put the money into the agency's general fund.

Four agencies were nominated and the local store staff voted during the last two weeks for their favorite, Gina Koch, store manager, told The Desert Sun.

"It was an agency that the staff felt deserved the money," said Koch.

The store opened last December and was one of the first few stores to open in the growing North Jackson Street retail area in Indio. When the store opened, Fresh & Easy donated $1,000 to Desert Samaritans for the Elderly, which used the money to fund the Palm Desert-based agency’s financial aid program for seniors.

The program paid utility bills, rent, minor home repairs and other bills for seniors in emergency situations, said Michael Barnard, CEO of Desert Samaritans for the Elderly.

During the Fresh & Easy anniversary celebration, coupon books good for the rest of the month were handed out to shoppers, according to the newspaper report.
