DoCoMo, Seven-Eleven Swap Bill Statements for Cell Phones

TOKYO -- NTT DoCoMo Inc. and Seven-Eleven Japan Co. plan to introduce a service enabling customers to download bill statements onto their cellular phones for easy in-store payments on June 15, according to a press release on TradingMarkets.com.

The service will first be used for paying DoCoMo cell phone charges. A customer with a handset featuring DoCoMo's mobile wallet function can download bill statements using the carrier's special software, and then tap the phone against the reader installed at Seven-Eleven's nationwide chain of convenience stores to pay the balance with cash or Seven & i Holdings Co.'s nanaco e-money.

In addition to eliminating the need to carry hard copies of invoices, the service is capable of handling multiple bill statements, the release stated.

It will eventually be offered to other firms, and the partners hope the new service will reduce paper usage and invoice-issuing costs for utilities, mail order companies and other companies sending out bill statements.
