Convenience Stores Expanding to Smaller Indoor Sites.

NEW YORK -- Convenience store operators are opening small stores insides buildings to boost profits, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Traditional convenience stores are facing pressure from gas stations doubling as convenience stores, as well as0 a market saturated with 135,000 stores, a 35 percent increase from 1993, the Journal reported. In an effort to compensate, many new chains are carrying more fresh food, impulse items and higher-margin items, such as 12-ounce sodas, the newspaper said.

Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc., a Canadian retailer that owns 2,000 Circle-K stores in the United States, has succeeded with smaller stories in Canada and is planning similar stores in the United States.

Also, 7-Eleven plans to add 100 of the stores to its 5,800 stores in the United States and Canada, the paper said.
