Convenience Chains Give Back to Communities

PUEBLO, Colo. -- Loaf 'N Jug has increased contributions to Colorado and Wisconsin's March of Dimes WalkAmerica by 50 percent over last year, totaling $156,000 in 2006.

Loaf 'N Jug raised money through in-store promotions and employee participation. The chain's 147 stores are Colorado and Wisconsin's largest sponsor for the fundraiser, according to the March of Dimes. Stores in an additional six states also participate in WalkAmerica.

WalkAmerica is the March of Dimes' largest annual fundraiser. It provides support for healthy-baby programs including research, community services, education and advocacy.

"From store associates on up, everyone at Loaf 'N Jug is to be applauded," said Shelly Goodchild, state director of the March of Dimes Colorado chapter. "The funds Loaf 'N Jug raised will go a long way towards helping us invest in important research and programs that benefit babies and their families in our state and across the country."

Loaf 'N Jug stores are operated by Kroger, along with 2,483 supermarkets and multi-department stores, 783 convenience stores, 423 jewelry stores, 593 supermarket fuel centers and 42 food processing plants.

In related news, Kwik Trip is holding a fundraiser for the Special Olympics Wisconsin this weekend. For $4, customers can buy two bratwursts and a 32-ounce Big Buddy drink and donate $1 to the charity with the purchase, reported the Green Bay Press-Gazette.

Customers also can use the Kwik Card rewards program to contribute. When they designate the Special Olympics as their charity, 3 cents per gallon of gas and 5 percent of in-store purchases are donated to the fund, the newspaper reported.

Kwik Trip is the Special Olympics Wisconsin's "Premier Partner," and raised more than $125,000 last year.
