Cumberland Farms' SmartPay Reaches $1B Mark

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Cumberland Farms Inc. surpassed the $1 billion mark in gas sold via its SmartPay mobile app since its launch in January 2013.

The app, free for consumers to join and offering 10 cents off on every gallon of gas, has grown exponentially. In fact, during the last 12 months, transaction volume as doubled, and the SmartPay Check-Link is the most popular payment method at the pump, exceeding any debit brand, credit brand or cash, Cumberland Farms stated.

"Two years ago, SmartPay was an entirely new concept, so it's incredible to see that we have already hit the $1 billion mark in terms of sales through the program," said Dave Banks, Cumberland Farms' chief information officer. "We have saved our customers more than $33 million on gas to date with SmartPay and they absolutely love it. We're seeing thousands of new customers join SmartPay every week, most of which are from word-of-mouth referrals by existing customers."  

In addition saving 10 cents per gallon at the pump, the SmartPay loyalty program provides mobile app users with a free Farmhouse Blend Coffee or a free Chill Zone Beverage for every 30 gallons of gas purchased, with 1.5 million free drinks given away thus far via the SmartPay Rewards program.

Major suppliers have also partnered with Cumberland Farms to provide free coupons on a variety of in-store products.

Framingham-based Cumberland Farms Inc. operates nearly 600 convenience stores in the Northeast and Florida.
