South African C-store Concept Wins Innovation Award

A partnership between Engen, South Africa's second largest petroleum company, and Woolworths South Africa was awarded top honors in the convenience category of Planet Retail's inaugural Innovation Awards.

Engen, which operates 1,250 service stations and 450 Quickshop c-stores, partnered with Woolworths to roll out the concept in South Africa during 2006. The concept combines a Woolworths section with a typical Engen forecourt store. The format offers a broad range of ready made meals, fresh fruit and other goods, according to Planet Retail. The store is located in Cape Town, South Africa, and is frequented most often in the evenings and weekends, when customers shop Woolworths' ready meals and convenience style foods. Despite the small size, the Woolworths section maintains some of the highest sales space productivity throughout the entire brand, according to Planet Retail.

The winners were chosen by the organization's international team of analysts that reviewed the concepts by retail and foodservice operators from across the globe.

Other Innovation Award winners were:

-- Hypermarkets & Superstores: Wal-Mart Supercenter in Brazil
-- Supermarket/Neighborhood Store: ThreeSixty in Hong Kong
-- Discount Store: Aldi in United Kingdom
-- Virtual Store: Amazon in the United States
-- Entertainment, Electronics and Office Supply: Best Buy Mobile in United States
-- Foodservice: Missoni Hotels in Europe, the Middle East and Asia.
