Royal Farms Becomes Children's Museum Exhibit

BALTIMORE -- The Port Discovery Children’s Museum here welcomed its newest permanent exhibit last week, called the Royal Farms Convenience Store and Fill’er Up Station.

The store, a model of an actual Royal Farms c-store with a kid-friendly twist, includes a dairy refrigerator door that moos when opened, publication racks with healthy magazines, a variety of traditional convenience store food items and a "Good to Go!" station that offers healthy snack and meal options, the museum reported. The exhibit will utilize dramatic play to address health, wellness and consumerism while teaching children math, science, reading and social studies skills and knowledge, according to the report.

The exhibit includes:
-- Fill’er Up Station: visitors fill up a Volkswagen Bug with gas or inflate flat tires with an air pump;
-- Cool Kids: visitors become employees and learn about organization and categorization by restocking the shelves;
-- Food Labels: visitors learn about food labels and how best to read them to find the healthiest choices;
-- "Good to Go!" Bin: visitors choose a meal from this replica of "Good to Go" sections in Royal Farms stores;
-- Food Pyramid: after making food selections, visitors can check to see if they successfully chose a healthy meal;
-- Magnifibooks Stand: visitors can browse a magazine stand filled with children’s magazines; and,
-- Check it Out: visitors check out their items using a real bar code scanner and play cashier at the working cash register.
