"Real Life" Training for Alcohol and Tobacco Sales

ALBANY, N.Y. – Responsible Retailers of New York and the New York Association of Convenience Stores, along with the Food Industry Alliance of New York State will hold sessions throughout the state outlining techniques to prevent the underage sale of tobacco and alcohol to minors.

The two and a half hour programs target owners, operators and employees of retailer outlets, including c-stores and service stations. The program will focus on elements similar to the "We Card" program, a national program that educates retailers on underage sales and its repercussions.

The course covers tobacco and alcohol laws and penalties, prohibited sales and restricted products, acceptable forms of identification, examination and identification of fake IDs, required signage and license display, self-service restrictions, the refusal of sales, handling customer conflict, and other tools and resources.

Classes will be held in Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, Oneonta, Newburgh and Albany from July 10 to 27.

Last year, more than 3,500 retailers across New York State have been fined for selling tobacco or alcohol to minors. Out of those, 100 have lost their licenses to sell the products in stores.
