Pilot, Food City Partner to Build Fuel Terminal

NEW YORK -- Two businesses with strong ties to the Knoxville, Tenn., region are embarking on a joint venture to build a new fuel terminal in the existing Knoxville Terminal Complex. Knoxville-based Pilot Corp. and a subsidiary of Food City’s parent company, K-VA-T Food Stores Inc. will begin construction as soon as possible.

The planned facility will procure and distribute fuel to Food City Gas’n’Go Fuel Centers in Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia, and to Pilot convenience stores and Pilot Travel Centers throughout the region. The facility will distribute a variety of products including gasoline, diesel, ethanol and aviation fuel.

"Our fuel centers have become an important convenience for our customers," said Steve Smith, Food City president and CEO. "This facility will allow us to better service our customer’s needs," Smith said, adding that the ground-up project will focus on safety and efficiency.

The combined investment for the two companies is in excess of $10 million and will create up to 15 new jobs.

Headquartered in Abingdon, Va., Food City/K-VA-T Food Stores operates 105 retail food outlets throughout the tri-state regions of Southeast Kentucky, Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee.
