Giant Eagle Launches New Gas Discount Campaign

PITTSBURGH -- Giant Eagle is launching a test to give away additional gas discounts, the Post-Gazette reported. The four-week experiment is being done as competitors are set to offer gas programs to counter Giant Eagle's fuelperks discounts.

The new gas discounts would expand a system that now allows users of the company's Advantage loyalty card to earn 10 cents off a gallon at Giant Eagle's GetGo convenience stores for every $50 spent. Under the pilot program, card users would get additional cents off when buying specific products and brands, the Post Gazette reported. The test ends July 5.

Giant Eagle is moving to battle competition on other fronts by cutting prices chain-wide between 8 and 10 percent on 1,800 health and beauty care products. This comes as gas prices remain high and consumers are looking for ways to trim costs, the report stated. However, competition may be more of a motivating factor.

Western Pennsylvania shoppers have seen new Aldi and Save-A-Lot stores opening while they look for low prices at Wal-Mart Supercenters. And both Shop 'n Save and Foodland are considering new programs to help customers earn discounts on gas, according to industry sources. And the Shop 'n Save program would involve Sunoco stations.

Giant Eagle controls more than 50 percent of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area's grocery dollars, according to research firm TradeDimensions International's Market Scope publication, but has battled a reputation for high prices, according to the report.
