Former Town & Country Convenience Stores CEO Running for Mayor

SAN ANGELO, Texas -- Alvin New, former chief executive officer of Town & Country Food Stores, a 168-store chain that was sold to Susser Holdings Corp. in 2007, filed this week to run for mayor of San Angelo in the Nov. 3 election.

According to the San Angelo Standard-Times, New claims his extensive business experience will be important in helping the city tackle important issues such as infrastructure and water supply updates, job creation, job retention and sales tax issues.

As leader of Town & Country, New led a $940 million convenience store company with 1,900 employees, he said. He resigned after the merger with Susser, citing an inability to make the commitment to relocate his family from San Angelo to Susser’s Corpus Christi headquarters. However, he stayed on long enough to assist in the integration of Town & Country into the Susser operations.

"I’m used to budgeting for capital improvement projects and used to borrowing money as we would in the bond market," New said. "I am used to looking for efficiencies in project management and making projects happen on time. I think that recent background in those issues gives me a unique perspective."

Several other individuals have also filed or are expected to file to run to replace former mayor J.W. Lown, who resigned unexpectedly in May.

New, 46, was born in Brownfield, Texas, and has lived in San Angelo for 28 years. He graduated from Angelo State University, which he said is one of the great economic engines in the community, and has been heavily involved in local entrepreneurial efforts, he said.

As vice chairman of the NACS, he has lobbied in Washington and Austin, and can "hit the ground running" as it relates to lobbying for San Angelo, he said. And since he doesn’t have to run a business now, he can be heavily committed to the mayor post, he said.

"I felt like the issues that are in front of us right now are issues that I am particularly prepared to affect," he said. "It feels like what they need right now is served well by my set of experiences and my background."
