Wisconsin Program Allows License Plate Renewals at C-Stores

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- A Wisconsin pilot program aims to make renewing license plates as convenient as buying gasoline, snacks and slushies, reported the Associated Press.

The state Department of Transportation has allowed three convenience stores to process and distribute annual license-plate renewal stickers. The pilot program, which began in June, could spread statewide.

"I've got more than 200 convenience stores that have requested the paperwork that would allow them to participate," said Harlen Hegdal, director of the DOT's Wisconsin License Centers. "I'm hoping that we can proceed across the state."

The three convenience stores are in Oshkosh, Jackson and the central Wisconsin town of Rome.

"It's been pretty popular," said Lori Pritzl, owner of Pritzl's Corner Mart in Rome. "We charge a $5 fee plus the normal costs for renewal, but it saves a 30-mile drive into Stevens Point."

The stores offer the service every day except Sunday and process the requests until 8 p.m. on weekdays and 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The process takes only a minute or two, Hegdal said. People would still need to stop by a Division of Motor Vehicles service center for other matters such as renewing a driver's license.
