International News: Shell, Waitrose Partner on Prepared Food Offer

LONDON -- Upscale British grocer Waitrose will test sandwiches, snacks and a small range of groceries in gas stations and convenience stores operated by Royal Dutch Shell, Reuters reported.

Initially Waitrose said it would sell a selected range of products at three Shell stores around Birmingham, central England, according to the report. If successful, the two companies will extend the partnership next year to more of Shell's 900-plus U.K. sites.

"Today's announcement builds on plans by Waitrose to accelerate its presence in the convenience sector through new formats and channels," Waitrose Managing Director Mark Price said in a statement cited by Reuters.

Earlier this year, Waitrose said it planned to open up to 300 convenience stores over the next five to 10 years. Meanwhile, the chain said it would enter a deal to open outlets in motorway service stations run by Welcome Break, following an initial trial at two sites, the report stated.
