Wawa Sells Billionth Cup of Coffee

TINICUM, Pa. -- Wawa’s Chief Executive Officer Howard Stoeckel brought new meaning to "bean counting" earlier this week when he offered to pour the company’s billionth cup of coffee to unsuspecting patron Terrance Capers.

"It was a total surprise. I stop here every day. This is my Wawa. I know everyone at this Wawa. It was something special," Capers told the Delaware County Times. The balloons and party decorations withstanding, Capers was equally surprised to see sports radio personality Howard Eskin accompanying Stoeckel.

"We’ve sold a lot of coffee and our coffee has evolved," Stoeckel told the paper. "Today is a big milestone for us so we’re celebrating the customers and associates who make us very special." Eskin, a self-professed Wawa regular, was the "honorary brewmaster" at the event, the paper reported.

The celebration also kicked off a new coffee promotion dubbed Coffeetopia, an eight-week promotion that features a different Wawa coffee variety every two weeks for customers to sample in all Wawa stores, reported the paper. Regular coffee will be highlighted the first two weeks, followed by Wawa Kona coffee, Wawa French Vanilla coffee, and ending with Colombian coffee.

The promotion, which ends Nov. 2, also features in-store drawings for customers to win one week’s worth of free coffee.

"Our purpose is to simplify the customers’ lives and help better their days, to help get them through the day," Stoeckel told the paper.
