More Casey's Stores Undergo Large-Format Remodel

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Casey's General Stores is continuing its march forward with a large-format remodel, and has already converted more than 300 of Ankeny, Iowa-based chain's 1,700 locations, according to a State Journal-Register report.

The new format includes expanded coffee bars, self-serve ice cream, made-to-order subway sandwiches and the addition of walk-in beer vaults.

"We're kind of pushing it out and seeing where it works," said Bill Waljasper, senior vice president and chief financial officer for Casey's.

The latest store to begin the conversion process is located at 801 E. Walnut St. in Chatham, Ill. Construction began in early May, and the conversion work typically takes about a month, said Waljasper. The company also operates another chatham store at 1200 N. Main St.

Casey's, which operates stores in 11 states, has greatly expanded since fending off an attempted hostile takeover by Alimentation Couche-Tard in 2010. It has regularly added new services and stores since then, including 19 stores acquired from the Springfield, Ill.-based Harper on the Way chain.
