C-Stores Help Texas DOT Encourage Motorists to Take the Dry Road

AUSTIN, Texas -- In an effort to reduce alcohol-related traffic accidents, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has initiated a campaign to reduce drunk driving this holiday season, in partnership with the Texas Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association, Texas Restaurant Association, Texas Package Store Association, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission and Texas Municipal Police Association.

The campaign aims to make individuals who drink alcohol during the holiday season, whether at social gatherings or at home, aware of the danger they pose to themselves and others, according to a report by the Greenville Herald-Banner.

Notices have been placed in convenience stores, restaurants, and on the mirrors above bathroom sinks in nightclubs and bars, the report stated.

"We know Texans like to celebrate the holidays in a big way," Carol Rawson, TxDOT traffic operations director, said in a news release. "That's why we're making a special effort to reach motorists with don't-drink-and-drive reminders at locations where alcohol is served or purchased. We want everyone to be safe this holiday season."

According to the most recent statistics available from TxDOT, statewide, 85 traffic fatalities in which alcohol was a factor were reported in December 2008. Despite a decrease in the number of alcohol-related traffic fatalities in recent years, Texas continues to lead the nation in the number of individuals killed.
