7-Eleven Sales Remain Strong

7-Eleven Inc., which operates more than 5,700 convenience stores in the United States, yesterday reported U.S. same-store merchandise sales for May 2001 increased by 3.9 percent, on top of a 7-percent increase for May 2000.

Total merchandise sales in May 2001 were $612.7 million, an increase of 5.2 percent over the May 2000 total of $582.5 million. Increases in prepaid telephone cards, non-carbonated beverages, cigarettes, beer and wine, snacks, and fresh foods primarily drove sales as well as the company's proprietary Slurpee frozen beverage.

Year-to-date merchandise sales are $2.745 billion for 2001 compared to $2.641 billion for 2000, a 4.6 percent increase. U.S. same-store sales year-to-date for 2001 are up 3.7 percent. These year-to-date U.S. same-store merchandise sales results are on top of a 7.7 percent increase in 2000 over the prior year-to-date period when excluding the additional day in 2000.

Gasoline sales for May 2001 were $271.8 million, an increase of 13.8 percent over the prior year period of $238.8 million. Gasoline sales year-to-date totaled $1.187 billion, an increase of 12.2 percent. In May, however, the average gallons of gasoline sold per store decreased 1.4 percent, Year-to-date average gallons sold overall have increased 3 percent, the company said.
