Sub-$1 Gas Makes First Appearance in Michigan

Fuel price war may be the reason.

HOUGHTON LAKE, Mich. — Fuel prices have dropped so low here that a gallon of gas is cheaper than a newspaper or even a bottle of water.

Several stations in Houghton Lake, located on the largest inland lake in the state of Michigan, have dropped their prices for a regular gallon of gas to below $1 per gallon, reported GasBuddy.com.

In fact, the lowest price was recorded at Beacon & Bridge Market, which sold a regular gallon of gas for 78 cents per gallon, reported WJBK. Meanwhile, a Marathon station located in the town of approximately 4,000 residents offered a regular gallon of gas for 95 cents.

Despite the return of these fuel prices not seen in many years, the news outlet reported the low prices are likely part of a price war. It's expected the stations will re-raise prices back above $1 per gallon.
