New U.S. Slurpee Champion

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- A former tax-law attorney holds a sweet distinction now that he has been named the proud seller of the most Slurpees in the United States in 2007.

"I tell my friends that now I sell smiles and it is a lot more fun," Don Mariotto told the Tri City Herald.

Mariotto is looking to break his own record. For six of the last nine months, his store here has been the No. 1 Slurpee seller in the world, the paper reported. "It's amazing for a little town like Kennewick," Mariotto, who bought the store three years ago, told the paper.

If he stays on course, next month he'll hold the top Slurpee sales spot in the world over a year period, Margaret Chabris, spokeswoman for 7-Eleven, told the paper. "If -- or when -- the store takes the top worldwide spot, the event would be historically significant."

In past years, Detroit and Winnipeg, Canada, have been the top sellers. "Don and the stores in the Tri-Cities are really set to break a trend. Not even a trend -- to totally overturn people who have been selling more Slurpees than anyone else in the world for a long time," she told the Tri City Herald.
