NACS Show Reminds Vendors to Leave Synthetic Drugs at Home

LAS VEGAS -- NACS, the Association for Convenience & Fuel Retailing, reminded all vendors exhibiting at the NACS Show here in 16 days to leave synthetic drugs at home.

"We just want to remind everyone that NACS does not permit the promotion or display of products at the show which are illegal for retailers to resell in their stores," wrote Leigh Walls, director of exhibit sales and services at NACS, as reported by the Huffington Post. "For example, the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) has recently listed synthetic drugs, sold as 'bath salts' or 'spice' as illegal for sale. Consequently, such items are banned from our exhibition."

The DEA made its first move toward banning several of the ingredients in bath salts a year ago this month. Bath salt-related incidents dropped dramatically since, according to the American Association of Poison Control.

NACS spokesperson Jeff Lenard told the website in an interview that he doesn't expect any synthetic drug problems at October's NACS Show, and was "not aware" of any companies who sold bath salts at last year's 50th annual convention.

Bath salts often contain mephedrone, an inexpensive element, and can evoke anything from "excited delirium" to violence and paranoia in users, the Huffington Post reported.
