McDonald's to Begin Offering 'After Midnight' Menu

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- When it comes to breakfast, McDonald's Corp. is willing to wager that customers are "lovin' it" after midnight. In fact, the fast-food giant now wants to serve a limited selection of breakfast and dinner items after midnight at some of its 24-hour locations.

According to a report by USA Today, an unspecified number of McDonald's locations will begin serving a limited combination of breakfast and dinner items between midnight and 4 a.m. The "After Midnight" menu is expected to appeal to more Millennials who like to eat what they want all day. The concept has been tested in Delaware and College Station, Texas, as well as parts of Ohio, southern California and in Rockford, Ill.

Customers will be able to order Big Macs and Chicken McNuggets, along with Egg McMuffins and hot cakes. They will also be able to mix and match from the two menus. For instance, a Quarter Pounder can be ordered with a side of hash browns, or a Sausage McMuffin can come with a side of French fries.

As CSNews Online previously reported, McDonald's President and CEO Don Thompson said in April the company was considering offering breakfast all day -- something it currently does in some markets around the world.

Still, Scott Hume, founder of BurgerBusiness.com, told USA Today that the breakfast additions to the late-night menu should not be taken as a sign that McDonald's will offer the daypart around the clock. That move would require major equipment upgrades and employee retraining, since McDonald's grills cannot handle full breakfast and dinner menus at the same time.

"McDonald's may have found a way to keep everyone happy -- at least from midnight to 4 a.m.," Hume added.

While Sonic and Jack in the Box restaurants serve breakfast all day, Burger King does not nationally and Wendy's hit the brakes on its breakfast expansion, as CSNews Online reported.
