Kmart Targets Convenience

Kmart Corp. yesterday reached an agreement with NCR Corp. to install NCR self-checkout scanners at approximately 1,300 Kmart stores by the end of the year.

"Providing shoppers with the option to scan, bag and select their payment method supports our goal at Kmart, to create a culture that centers around our customers," said Karen Austin, Kmart's divisional vice president. "Innovative products and services provided by companies like NCR help ensure world-class execution at our stores."

Kmart selected the NCR E-Series, citing the small footprint and flexible configuration of the NCR Self-Checkout solution, in addition to the company's retail experience, Austin said. NCR's contract with Kmart includes consulting and client installation services.

"NCR is committed to the self-checkout market and to meeting all the needs that retailers have at the point of service-an area critical to building lasting relationships with customers," said Mike Webster, NCR's general manager of self-checkout. "NCR's customized systems will enable retailers like Kmart to offer their shoppers fast, self-serve convenience."
